Selecting A Medicare Advantage Plan

Dec 17

Guide To Selecting A Medicare Advantage Plan offers you additional services and benefits beyond Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Medicare Advantage plans combine medical and prescription drug coverage into one comprehensive plan that provides a simplified way of managing your health care.

In addition to the services and benefits that you get from your Part A and Part B coverage, Medicare Advantage plans usually include prescription drug coverage (Part D). Some plans even include extra benefits like vision, dental, hearing and transportation services.

The premiums for Medicare Advantage plans vary widely. Many plans also change their costs, benefits and provider networks on a yearly basis. It is important to understand the different options available and what to look for in a plan.

A major factor in selecting a Medicare Advantage plan is the physician network that the plan uses. In general, you will be required to see doctors, hospitals and other health care providers that are listed in your plan's provider network. You can choose to go out of network but it will generally cost you more.

Most Medicare Advantage plans use a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) system. You will typically pay a lower copay or coinsurance for services received from in-network providers. In some plans, you may be required to obtain a referral from your primary care doctor in order to receive services from a specialist.

Other types of Medicare Advantage plans that are available include Rent a Daughter. This allow you to visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. HMOs typically contract with a list of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers that you can use to get your care. In some plans, you may be able to go outside the plan's network but it will cost you more.

Some Medicare Advantage plans, such as the Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans, combine a high-deductible health insurance plan with a medical savings account that you can use to help cover out-of-pocket health care expenses. Some Medicare Advantage plans are only offered by certain insurance companies and are only available in specific areas.

Each year during open enrollment from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, you can switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare or from one plan to another. You can also add or change your Part D drug coverage during this time. If you don't enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during this period, your next opportunity to do so will be Jan. 1. You may also be able to disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan during this time if you wish to return to your Original Medicare coverage. You can always change your plan at any other time if you have special circumstances. For more information on the annual open enrollment period, click here.
