6 Tips to Better Your Brains’ Performance

It may be true that as you get older, your memory also deteriorates. But this does not mean that if you are younger, your brain is not capable of memory deterioration. Aging is just one cause of memory loss, but there are other factors.

1) More Relaxation = Better Thinking

If you want to protect your recent memories, you should stay away from stress. Stress can trigger the release of cortisol, which can interfere with the brain’s performance, especially with handling recent memories. With chronic stress, the part of the brain which handles recent memories may even shrink. If you want to prevent this from happening, you should learn to relax a little and release the tension from your body. You should never let stress overwhelm you.  One method of relaxation which has proven to be beneficial is ‘meditation’.

2) Refrain From Cigarette Smoking

Cigarettes affect the flow of blood in your veins. Because of this, there may be a chance of reduced blood flow to your brain; and reduced blood flow means reduced oxygen. With lesser oxygen to consume, the brain may not function as well as expected, causing memory issues not to mention all the other health related problems associated with smoking.

3) Stay Away from Brain Toxins

As you may know, illegal drugs may cause harm to your brain’s functioning. However, you should also know that prescription drugs, if misused, may also have the same toxic effect to your brain. Thus, you should always follow the prescription given to you be your doctor, and never self-medicate. This may affect your brain’s normal performance and with prolonged use of prescribed or illicit drugs, may adversely affect the proper functioning of your brain which could cause memory loss.

4) Eat Healthy

Your brain functions according to the nutrients that it receives from the food that you eat. Thus, if you are deprived of certain nutrients, then it may have an adverse effect on the functioning of your brain. As a preventative measure, you should eat a healthy and balanced diet so that you will absorb all the vitamins and nutrients that your body needs, so limiting the amount of junk food which includes fast food restaurants, would be beneficial.

5) Exercise Your Brain

Find ways to use and improve your thinking skills. Some mentalists propose techniques which are designed to improve mental skills. We all have the potential to possess a good functioning memory, thus it should be something that we can all improve. All we have to do is to find ways and try techniques that can effectively help us develop our potential.

Most people believe that by engaging themselves into educational activities, they are improving their mental faculties. This is true, and you can try this even at home. Simple activities like crossword puzzles can exercise your brain. This may help your brain to function better or at least, to help prevent it from deteriorating more.

6) Shield Your Brain

There is no point of improving the brain if you cannot protect it physically. You should always protect your head from injuries as head trauma could critically affect the functioning of your brain. Even simple injuries should be avoided, because repeated minor injuries, if accumulated, may cause damage. Thus, you should try simple prevention, like putting a helmet on when bicycling, or any other activity where a head injury could happen when in an accident.

If you want to be able to think better, your brain’s health is the key. Thus, you should keep it as healthy as possible and avoid all those factors which may expose you to mental deterioration.

After all, if you feel better, your brain performs better.

It has been said that through meditation, you are able to calm not only your body but your mind as well.

The perception is that meditation is difficult.   It may be true that in order to perfect your meditation skills you need to practice it for years, however, you can begin with the simplest relaxation techniques with only 15 minutes a day.

Meditation is a good way to reduce stress.  If you have less stress in your lives or at least, know better how to handle the stress you do have, you may have better all-round health.  Through mediation, your concentration will be strengthened, which will help you fully focus on any mental activity that you are working on.

5 Steps To Take For A Less Stressed, More Relaxed, You

Find a spot where you can sit and relax comfortably.  Pay attention to your breathing.  Clear your mind for a moment and take some quiet time for yourself.

Here are a few tips to assist you:

1) Find your spot

Especially if you’re a beginner, you may want to find a quiet place where you can meditate.  As you become more expert in meditation, you will notice that you can meditate anywhere.

2) Be comfortable

Look for your position which will keep you at ease but not asleep.

  • Crossing your legs (if you have the flexibility), sitting up straight (but not rigid) as this will help you to breath properly
  • Lying down (if you can do this without falling asleep)
  • Or find a comfortable place to sit with your feet flat to the floor (ground), sitting up straight

3) Let Go of the Tension

Observe which parts of your body are most tensed.  You should learn how to tense up those parts and then release the tension in those ‘same’ parts. You may experience the release as your body begins to be drained from all the tension. If you repeat the process, you will, over time, learn to relax more easily.

4) Breathe properly

Breathe in a natural and relaxed manner.  As you practice your breathing technique, you could try breathing in through your mouth and out through your nose.  Over time, this will feel more natural.  This way of breathing is known to be much more beneficial for your overall health & well-being.

5) Pay attention

There may be instances when your mind may be disturbed by other thoughts, but you should always remind yourself to go back into paying special attention to your breathing.  With constant reminder, the thoughts that may disturb you, will soon fade away.

As you practice your meditations, it can really help you clear your mind and increase your focus. By feeling better, your brain also performs better.
